Punjabi is spoken by 102 million people all over the world. It is the ninth most spoken language in the world and the third most spoken language in England and Canada. There is a big need of teaching Punjabi as a Second Language (PSL) to the children of emigrants whose primary language is usually language of the country they have settled in. There are scant resources that exist to teach Punjabi as a second language.
Stepping Stones PSLTM Instructional Resources is a modern, research based curriculum to teach Punjabi as a Second Language (PSL) to children whose primary language is English.
The comprehensive curriculum is divided into eight levels. The children start off learning the symbols and sounds of the Gurmukhi script, the Penty Akhri and are able to read Gurbani by the end of level seven. The text complexity, the vocabulary and text length increase as the students move into higher levels. Each level of Punjabi language proficiency has its own benchmarks the student must achieve in order to move to the next level.
The PSL instructional resources incorporate the most current second language teaching pedagogy. The teacher follows I Do, We Do and You DO process of teaching new content and skills. Children learn by watching and doing what they see and hear, then practicing together and finally working independently. As the students hear, speak, read and write the new language, they master the sounds, the vocabulary, the syntax and reading becomes comprehensible.
PSL Instructional Resources are systematic, developmentally, age and culturally appropriate. Each book follows a pattern. Each book is divided into several lessons. Each lesson includes many components such as a teaching section, practice exercises, homework and review for the following week. Several quizzes and tests are included to assess what was taught.
The Stepping Stones PSLTM Instructional Resources have been used for nearly 25 years in the United States, Australia and Canada. They incorporate proven and effective strategies that work with the students and the teachers.
