Lesson 1A: The Need for Gurmat Sikhia
Gurmat Sikhia means the learning from our Guru’s wisdom. Lives of
Gurus and Gusikhs from the past also teach us the Sikh way of life.
Whether we are acting alone or in a society, Gurus’ wisdom must
become the basis of our conduct. When we are ready to take an
action, we must consider Gurmat as our guide and decide whether
that action is aligned with Sikhi principles. Ask yourself, “If Guru Ji
was watching me, would I do this?” Remember that Guru Ji is
always watching you. Guru is with us all the time.
Gurmat not only teaches us what to do, but also it guides us about
how we should look in our appearance. Sikh Rahni and Rahit Mariyada
are part of Gurmat Sikhia. So it is a vast concept that is crucial for
our survival as a Sikh.
Most of the learning happens when we interact with the text actively.
We develop deeper understanding when we analyze what we read and
see how it applies to our daily lives. This year, you read about many
topics in Gurmat Books as well as Punjabi Reader books. Choose 5
Gurmat topics to research and learn more deeply. Create a written
project for each and add artwork for that. Make it presentable in
your class. Here are a few suggestions.
1. Visakhi and Bandhi Chhod Diwas (you must do these)
2. A personal dictionary of 50 words (you must do these)
Choose two more topics.
3. Any one principle of Sikhism or about Sikh Identity
4. or any one Topic of your choice……………………………………………………
